Information
Lot # 77
Estimate 40,000.00 - 45,000.00 USD
Lead $1 1889-CC PCGS MS63
Description
FROM THE P.F.M. COLLECTION. One of the classic KEY DATE Morgan dollars that is in demand in all grades. Only 350,000 were struck and the vast majority of this date either went into circulation or were melted en masse as a result of the Pittman Act of 1918. While many dates were heavily represented in the GSA holdings of the early 1970s, only a single coin came from the vast quantities of CC dollars from that holding. Despite the rumors of three bags from other sources, a look at the PCGS and NGC Population figures, these likely are just rumors. The MS63 piece in the P.F.M. is about as high a grade as most collectors could even hope to obtain for their sets. Dave Bowers calls the MS63 grade the "optimal collector grade" in his Red Book of Morgan dollars. The present coin displays a good amount of detail from a bold strike. Soft, satiny mint luster blooms on both sides imparting a bold visual effect for the assigned grade. A few teeny scuffs are noted on either side, and account for the grade, but do not detract from the general eye appeal. PCGS 96, NGC 65. We think that there is some duplication in the population reports, inflated by resubmissions hoping for a higher grade. The majority of those finer are graded MS64, in fact, only two have graded finer than MS64 at PCGS, a single MS65 and the monster Eliasberg-Jack Lee MS68. The current PCGS Price Guide value in MS63 is $51,500 and the most recent example sold in the 2018 FUN auction for $42,011; just prior to that, we sold one in our December 2017 Regency Auction XXIV for $49,938. If you are still looking for a CHOICE 89-CC for your set, this is a great chance to finally end your search! Cert. Number 21811207 PCGS # 7190
