Lead Hand Forged 19th to Early 20th Century Ozarks Fish
Description
Hand Forged 19th to Early 20th Century Ozarks Fish Gig (5 Prong). Fish gigging is a tradition in Missouri, especially in the Ozark region. An antique fish gig from Missouri would typically be a three or four prong fork made from tough steel, mounted on a long wooden pole, often 14 to 16 feet in length. Fishing and its methods have come a long way in the past 100 years. When cane poles were the primary method of fishing and the water was clear enough to see the fish hand forged gigs like this were the tool of choice for putting fish on the table. The clear water streams of the Ozarks were perfect for the use of this method. They were also used in the winter time when the ice was on by cutting holes in ice with axes and as a group pushing fish past the holes for the fishermen to gig the fish as they swam past. Today there are still sportsman that enjoy the sport of catching fish in this manner. Hand forged tools made for the same purpose there are rarely two that are identical and thus collected by fishing enthusiasts, a reminder of how our forefathers got it done. It measures 16 3/8" Long Ancient Authentic
