Single edged, curved blade with fuller. Double acid etched with Queen Victoria Royal Cypher and floral designs. Maker marked by William Buckmaster, London on the ricasso. Leather buffer pad present. Decorated brass hilt with fishskin and twisted wire grip. Brass scabbard named to Troubridge and "7th Royal Fusiliers" near the throat. (1) Framed art print & letter named to Troubridge. Letter is dated December 1, 1858 and is addressed to Major Haley requesting he attend a meeting with General Hay to discuss issues with cartridges. Also includes print of a Crimean War battle scene. Size: 11 1/2" x 20". Sir Thomas St. Vincent Hope Cochrane Troubridge, 3rd Baronet, CB was born May 25, 1815. During the Crimean War he served as a Major of the 7th Royal Fusiliers and took part in the battles of Alma and Inkerman. At the Battle of Inkerman his position came under heavy attack from Russian infantry and artillery. During the attack Troubridge was hit by a Russian shell and lost his left leg and right foot. However, he remained in his position until the attack could be repulsed. Due to his actions he was awarded the French Legion of Honour, Ottoman Order of the Medjidie, appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath, and an Aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria. In 1855 Troubridge became director-general of army clothing. On October 2, 1867 Troubridge passed away at the age of 52. He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, London. The Battle of Chickamauga was fought on September 18th-20th, 1863 and was the first major battle of the war fought in Georgia. Chickamauga was fought between the US Army of the Cumberland under Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans and the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Gen. Braxton Bragg, and was named for Chickamauga Creek. The Confederate army secured a decisive victory at Chickamauga but lost 20 percent of its force in battle. After two days of significant fighting, Bragg and his men broke through Union lines and forced the Federals into a siege at Chattanooga. Chickamauga was the second bloodiest battle of the Civil War, ranking only behind Gettysburg, and was the deadliest battle in the Western Theater. About Captain Matthew McClintock Duffie (M. M. Duffie) | March 11, 1833 - September 12, 1906: During the War - In 1861 Duffie, at the time a practicing lawyer in Princeton, Arkansas, joined the Confederacy and fought with the Dallas Rifles / Company C, of the Sixth Arkansas Infantry. His company was composed of ninety-nine men. He served as lieutenant until January, 1862, when he was made captain of his company. His Commander, General Thomas C. Hindman, offered Duffie the position of major and quartermaster, but Duffie declined and instead wrote on the commission “Respectfully declined; I prefer to remain with the boys.” He was in many of the most important battles, among which were Shiloh, Murfreesboro, Perrysville, and Chickamauga. He was wounded four times during action, and was severely wounded in the Battle of Chickamauga. Following Chickamauga he was promoted to the position of major and assigned to post duty at Unionville, S.C., which he held until the last post in the State had surrendered. On May 10,1865, he surrendered a company of infantry and one battery of artillery, and is said to have given up millions of dollars worth of Confederate stores which had been sent to upper South Carolina for safety. He left service as a Lieutenant Colonel. In September of that year he again returned to Arkansas and resumed his law practice. Prior to the War - Duffie was born March 11, 1833 in South Carolina, the second of eleven children born to Reuben L. and Annie (McClintock) Duffie. Early in life Duffie followed agricultural pursuits as a livelihood, and also taught school for many years. In politics he was Democratic. He attended Concord High School in Fairfield District, S.C., and then spent three years at Davidson College in North Carolina. In 1856 he graduated from Erskine College in South Carolina. In October 1856, Duffie moved to Arkansas and taught school for two years. In August 1858 he was admitted to the bar, and in 1860 was admitted to practice in the Arkansas Supreme Court. After the War - Duffie returned to Arkansas and resumed his law practice. In 1877 he was elected to the State Senate, and in 1879 he was elected president of the Arkansas Senate. On February 7, 1866 he married Hannah Cooksey. They had 7 children. He was active in the Masonic Lodge and in politics (Democratic). In 1884 Duffie was nominated as presidential elector on the Democratic ticket, was elected by large majority, voted for Grover Cleveland, and carried the vote of his State to Washington.
