At the stroke of twelve, beneath paper moons,
a blue crab clears his throat with a click of claws.
Barnacled gavel polished by tide and time,
he stands on a crate labeled Miscellaneous Wonders.
"Lot one!" he calls, voice brined with bays and bells,
ringing the New Year in with a ship's bright chime.
An hourglass coughs its last year of sand,
while kelp streamers sway like memories.
A teapot hums with forgotten afternoons,
a compass still points to someone's home,
lace doilies flutter-whitecaps of dust-
as bids rise like gulls on a morning breeze.
He snaps the bell: sold! to the future,
sold! to whoever remembers how to listen.
Coins clink like pebbles in a pocket of tide,
and the crowd smells faintly of salt and hope.
Midnight breaks, a wave against the dock.
Fireworks bloom like anemones of light.
The blue crab bows, shell shining cobalt,
and rings once more-clear, kind, and true-
welcoming a year that knows its past,
and auctions it forward, carefully,
one treasured thing at a time.
