At HiBid, we proudly feature auctioneers through our Auctioneer Spotlight on HiBid, offering insights into their journey, experiences, and services. In this edition, we talk with Daren Anderson of Big D Auctions, who shares his passion for the auction industry and how he has built his company while helping other auctioneers.
Getting Started in the Auction World
When asked about how he got his start, Daren’s story is both inspiring and rooted in tradition. “I attended auction school at the Worldwide College of Auctioneering in Mason City, IA, in October 2021. I’ve always had an interest in auctions from growing up on a farm and attending livestock auctions.”
Daren’s passion for auctioneering began as a child. A pivotal moment happened when he was about nine years old: “At a local sheep auction, the auctioneer asked a man named Allen Odden to step in and sell the sheep. His chant blew everyone away, and he later became a cattle auctioneer. That moment stuck with me.”

Overcoming Challenges and Building a Career
Starting any business comes with challenges, and for Daren, getting his name out there was one of the biggest hurdles. “Networking is crucial. I joined eight state associations and the National Auctioneers Association (NAA), attending conventions and participating in rookie contests.”
Through perseverance, Daren has grown Big D Auctions into a well-known name. Reflecting on the industry’s changes, Daren believes that the auction world has remained relatively consistent. However, he notes an increase in people trying to sell items on their own without professional help, which he feels could cost them more in the long run.
Highlights from the Auction Block
One of the most memorable moments in Daren’s career was graduating from the Worldwide College of Auctioneering, where he earned the title “Colonel.” He also cherishes the connections he has made across the country, creating lifelong friendships.
Daren has handled some truly unique auctions. “We once held an auction for a man with the same disease as Bruce Willis—he was a ‘prepper,’ and we auctioned generators and lifetime supplies of food.”

Big D Auctions: More Than an Auction House
Big D Auctions offers a range of services, from live and online auctions to estate cleanouts and technology support. “I wanted to help other auctioneers with technology,” Daren explains. With 41 years of experience and a Master’s degree in Technology, he’s been able to assist auctioneers nationwide. The company also offers technology classes for state associations, a service that sets Big D Auctions apart.
The personal attention that Big D Auctions provides to both buyers and sellers is another defining characteristic. “We go above and beyond to answer questions and help our customers,” Daren says.
Industry Trends and Technology’s Role in Auctions
When it comes to trends in the auction industry, Daren observes more individuals attempting to sell items themselves, rather than using professional auctioneers. However, he believes that technology will continue to play a transformative role in the industry, especially with platforms like HiBid. “AI will highly evolve the auction industry, and platforms need to be user-friendly with excellent support staff. Otherwise, people will look elsewhere.”
Advice for Aspiring Auctioneers and Auction Participants

For those considering a career in auctioneering, Daren offers straightforward advice: “Start young, attend a good auctioneer school, and network, network, network. You never know when a connection will help you in the future.”
For sellers and buyers, his tip is simple: “Find a reputable auctioneer. It makes all the difference, whether you’re consigning something or bidding.”
Personal Passions and Future Goals

Even with three businesses, Daren stays passionate about his work by embracing every auction and consignment as something new. He enjoys traveling, volunteering with the NAA, and mentoring students. Growing up with antique tractors and gas engines, he also loves attending threshing shows in his spare time.
As Daren reflects on his career and personal journey, his closing words are a reminder to make the most of each day: “If this is the last thing I ever had to say, I would like to be known as the person who reminded you to give each day your best, and network, network, network.”
