In mid-1940 with the US involvement in WWII becoming increasingly inevitable, the U.S. Navy alongside all other branches of our armed forces found themselves evaluating the projected demand for arms. Recognizing that demand for the standard issue m1911a1 would soon outweigh supply, they set out to find more affordable options to supplement gaps in their armories. It was determined that the most suitable gun for this purpose was the Smith & Wesson Military & Police .38 Spl. revolver with a 4" barrel. The M&P was the S&W “K-frame Military & Police” revolver which had proven to be popular in the civilian marketplace prior to the war. Modifications were made to these revolvers to make them more affordable, most notably a parkerized finish instead of the commercial blued. The Type 14 Nambu is a semi-automatic pistol produced between 1926 and 1945. Following John Moses Brownings deal to produce the Auto-5 by FN in Belgium, Browning returned to America to sell the same licensing to Remington, creating the Model 11. The Model 11 holds the distinction of being the first Semi Auto shotgun produced in the United States, and was produced until 1947 when they switched over to the Model 11-48. This example was one of the “Miltiary finish” examples to be produced for the government during WW2. It features a “U.S” stamp and ordnance bomb on both the barrel and receiver, as well as a “Military Finish” rollmark to signify that it does not feature the same high polish on the steel and checkered grip on the stock. The Springfield Armory Krag-Jorgensen rifle was the first smokeless powder rifle used by United States Armed Forces. The most distinctive feature of the rifle is its magazine. Commonly called the “Boer War Model’ Due to its association with the conflict, the Mark IV was the standard issue sidearm of the British Army from 1899 to 1904. They are easily recognized from their 4” barrels and birdshead grips. This example has a shaved cylinder, a modification on often done during impot to allow Americans to fire the more common .45 ACP, however .45 ACP is higher pressures than the original .455 proof and it is considered unsafe to shoot. This small revolver, designed primarily for plainclothesmen and off-duty police officers, made its public debut at The International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in 1950. At the conference, the Smith & Wesson sales force asked the police chiefs to vote on a name for the new revolver. The most commonly suggested name was “.38 Chief’s Special”. Designed with the needs of law enforcement officials in mind, the Chief’s Special proved to be a popular revolver for personal protection due to its size and weight. When Smith & Wesson adopted model numbers in 1957, the S&W Chiefs Special became the Model 36. This example is blued, sport the original wooden grips, and appears to be in good working order. In mid-1940 with the US involvement in WWII becoming increasingly inevitable, the U.S. Navy alongside all other branches of our armed forces found themselves evaluating the projected demand for arms. Recognizing that demand for the standard issue m1911a1 would soon outweigh supply, they set out to find more affordable options to supplement gaps in their armories. It was determined that the most suitable gun for this purpose was the Colt Police Positive .38 Spl. revolver with a 4" barrel. Modifications were made to these revolvers to make them more affordable, most notably the introduction of “Colt Wood” Plastic Grips. These revolvers were popularly issued to pilots and air crews. This example is in excellent condition and appears to be in good working order. The Model M1975 was designed by inventor Eli Whitney and has the distinction of being the first domestic produced firearm to serve as standard issue to United States forces. Due to supply demands and a loss of French made firearms resulting from their own revolution, the government passed an act in July 5, 1798 to let private contractors produce this pattern of musket. This example is an oddity, being made in 1800 by a contractor marking their locks “Scituate”, providing evidence they were produced in Scituate township, just north of Providence, Rhode island. In a 1970 Article by Thomas E. Holt regarding the Contractor produced 1795 muskets, it is suggested these scarce examples may have been produced at the hope forge in Scituate, which produced cannons for the US during the revolution as well as naval cannons for Americas privateers. It has been suggested that the Scituate marked rifles were part of 950 produced by William Rhodes and William Tyler of Providence, Rhode Island, of which no identifiable specimens of which exist. This rifle is a remarkably rare example amongst a pattern of US issued firearms already considered to be one of the scarcest. The original ramrod as well as barrel bands / sling swivels are present.
