Lead A RARE AND DESIRABLE STEINWAY A3 GRAND PIANO
Description
A Steinway Model A3 New York Grand Player Piano serial # 215050, case measures 83.25 inches, solid stained mahogany case, Duo-art player, a large collection of rolls will be included. According to Steinway company records #215050 left the Steinway factory in New York on February 17, 1923 and was shipped to the Aeolian factory in New York where a Duo-Art player was installed. In all likelihood, it was then shipped to Jenkins Music Company of Kansas City, Missouri. It has resided in the Kansas City area ever since. According to a label inside the case, the first original owner in 1923 was L.L. Marcel of 5900 Overhill Road, Mission Hills, Kansas. Louis Lee Marcell (1878 - 1950) was born in Doniphan, Kansas in 1878. He was successful in oil and banking and was founder of several companies including the White Eagle Oil company. According to A Standard History of Kansas and Kansans 1918 Volume 1, written & compiled by William E. Connelley, Secretary of the Kansas State Historical Society, Topeka. Chicago: Lewis Publishing Company, copyright 1918, he was " one-time president of the board of trustees of the Conservatory of Music of Kansas City. Mr. Marcell maintained a life-long interest in musical affairs. He was a heavy financial contributor to the conservatory for many years." The piano then passed, along with the home at 5900 Overhill Road to his son-in-law Manville H. Davis. It was later purchased by Guyton Hamilton at an estate sale at the home and now resides a few miles south of there in Leawood, Kansas. A large collection of music rolls will be included. All bidding will take place online, by telephone or by absentee bid. Apparently in very good condition noting sun fade to one entire long side of the case. The working condition of the player appears to be very good and complete. It is totally incumbent on the bidder to make their own determination as to the exact condition. Any statements regarding the condition of this complex machine are made as a courtesy only. According to the seller the latest restoration was completed by Craig Brougher. Again, it is the bidder's responsibility to make their own determination as to the exact condition of this piano. A video with sound of the player in operation is available for viewing online. Serious bidders may inspect this Steinway player piano in person by appointment prior to March 17, at the home in Leawood, Kansas by contacting the auctioneer at 816.697.3830 or dirk@dirksoulisauctions.com.
