Description
This is more than a unique auction, it is an important piece of Canadian history and a story that began in the early 1800's - the homestead house in Fort Erie was the boyhood home of General Brigadier-General Ernest Alexander Cruikshank. While serving, he wrote a number of books on the history of Ontario particularly its military history, and in 1908 he was seconded to the Public Archives of Canada as keeper of military documents. It is known that his writings of the famous book "The War of 1812" are some of the most accurate and authentic writings on the War of 1812. The homestead house was also used for a period of time as a court house and the library where his portrait hangs today is where magistrates court was held. His wife "Julia Cruikshank" also a writer wrote a book, chronicling her life and love of this house and the area. This is only the first part of this remarkable historical home. The second part is the family that purchased this homestead and raised their family. The family kept all the original artifacts attached to the house lovingly restored it and added their own flare - the furnishings many of which were part of the antique collection of Secretary of State under Woodrow Wilson, Bainbridge Colby, there are many other pieces of interest - Louis XV furniture as well pioneer artifacts from the current owner's own ancestors from the 17th, 18th,& 19th Century. There are stories and local legends that the place has mysterious sightings - unexplained ghostly appearances and areas of the house that will give you an unexplained shiver. Our team spent a couple of days in the house preparing this fascinating auction and we found it charming and inviting, plus we have some new friends from the past.
